Episode 37 – Luke Skywalker (Bespin fatigues)

39780 – Luke Skywalker (Bespin fatigues)

If you listened to last month’s show, where Pete and I were interviewed you’ll know Luke in his Bespin ‘fatigues’ is my favorite figure. He’s the earliest figure I can recall owning back in the early 80’s. And my childhood Luke in all his played with glory is a central element of my Luke focus – which can be seen here

Given I own a few pieces I am going to insert some of my purchase data into this update. Which should be interesting as I’ve been buying Luke MOC’s for quite some years.

Here’s a summary of recent sales. The volume of sales wasn’t quite at the level of Bossk and IG-88 were in the last two months. There was quite a divergence in quality of the pieces, but I did end up finding most cardback variants.

Summary

31b AFA80 – $630

41a ungraded – $100

41b ungraded – $172.50

47a AFA80 – $326

48c ungraded – $150

77a ungraded – $145

Trilogo AFA80 – $645

Revenge Proof – $425.

Here’s my own data for the MOC variants I couldn’t find this past few months:

– 45a ungraded – $100 (C-7) – June 2012

– 48a ungraded – $316 (C-9) – August 2012

– 48b ungraded – $269 – April 2012

I couldn’t find a 45 back this month for Luke. I actually picked up an ungraded 45 back from CIB for $100 in 2012 (ungraded in C-7 condition).

And as a historical price point here is the data for my 2005/06 purchases:

– 31a AFA70 – $238

– 32a AFA80 – $285

On reflection I think I did pretty good on the 32 back and the 31 back probably doesn’t stack up too bad, though being a 70 (due to a wavy card) a comparison is a little unfair.

Here’s the full view of pieces found during the month.

Empire Strikes Back

If you were after Luke’s debut card in recent times there was an ample supply – by far the most I found for the figure (so I’ll post quite a few of them and it thins out after that). In my opinion this is the best picture for the figure – just why did Hasbro change it ?

31b AFA85 NM+ (C85/F85/B85) $865.99 – eBay link

This was a Auction style sale with a 99c listing price. Quite a few bids and bidders and as you can see from the pictures below he was worth bidding on (I’ll admit I thought of upgrading mine to this one, but dropped out after climbed over $600 odd).

31B AFA80 NM (C80/F85/B85) $630 – eBay link

This auction ended a few days after the AFA85 one did and again had a low starting price and attracted a lot of bids and bidders. Pretty good value in the end, relative to the AFA85. Actually as I look at I have a buyers regret in not having had a go at this (my 31b is an AFA70 with the card having quite a wave to it).

eBay make mention a ‘Best Offer’ was accepted for this figure, which I couldn’t confirm. Another interesting point to note is that AFA/CGA had labelled this as a “31a”. Luke was released on the 31b not the 31a and if you check the back of the card it’s the 31b – you would almost like to send it back to AFA/CGA to get them to fix it – at their cost !!

31 back summary

Some nice examples were up for sale in recent months. The AFA85 at $860 was certainly a very nice piece, and the straight 85 sub-grades really pushed this price up. The drop-off in price to the AFA80 seems about right from what we see typically.

41a Ungraded $100 – eBay link

When I put my run together I found this variant a little hard to find. I ended up settling with an AFA60 variant that has a yellowed bubble. Whilst it’s not in great condition, it isn’t quite as bad as this one..

41b AFA80NM (C80/F85/B85) $567 – eBay link

This is a figure sold by Jeff’s Collectables. Lot of action on this figure, it is actually the last Kenner cardback I need to complete my run. I was hoping to buy it but gave up when it broke $400. Whilst its in great condition I still feel this was a pretty pricey end to the auction (perhaps a couple of Luke Bespin collectors who dropped large bids to “ensure” they won clashed and we ended up at over $550 …

As I look at this variant I feel like I should have got in and bid. It would have rounded my Kenner ESB cardback collection for Luke. But I feel given its the last cardback I’m hunting I’ll wait to I see a nicer variant.

  1. I’m surprised to see that the limbs on most of these are quite different shade to the torso. I really like and prefer the shiny caramel colour of Luke Bespin. Great work BBM.
